About Killarney National Park
Currently Killarney National Park is approximately 10,800 ha. and incorporates lakes, woodlands, mountains, waterfalls, historic buildings and areas of significant natural heritage, including unique species & habitats. It is the first National Park in Ireland.
Its nucleus is the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park (formally known as the Muckross Estate, 4,300 ha.), presented to the Irish State in 1932. The rest is mainly the former Kenmare Estate, which was purchased from Lady Beatrice Grosvenor CBE and subsequently John McShane, in 1972 and 1985, respectively.
Note: Other areas of interest include:
– Tomies Wood & Cullinagh (with the abandoned village),
– Ross Castle (with nearby copper mines) and
– Innisfallen Island.
